Brad Smith is the first Canadian bachelor seeking true love in the original romantic reality series, The Bachelor Canada, premiering on Citytv this fall.
Currently a free agent with the CFL, the 28-year-old has lived out his childhood dreams on the football field enjoying a successful career from 2007 to 2011 as a wide receiver with the Montreal Alouettes (2007), Toronto Argonauts (2007-2009) and – most recently – the Edmonton Eskimos (2010-2011).
After years as a professional athlete, which saw him living out of suitcases and moving to more than a dozen apartments in five years, Smith’s transient career has made it virtually impossible for him to focus on love and find the right woman with whom to settle down. Between his busy lifestyle, travel schedule and intense training, long-distance relationships have been difficult for Smith. But now, he is ready to find roots of his own and settle down with the woman of his dreams.
Raised in Hudson, Quebec, Smith comes from a close-knit family with an older brother and sister, and loving parents who are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year. His father is the Honourable Senator Larry Smith, former CFL Commissioner and former President and CEO of the Montreal Alouettes. His father is his biggest role model whose leadership is something that Smith holds in high regard.
During his teens, Smith received a scholarship to attend the prestigious all-boys private boarding school, St. Andrew’s College, in Aurora, Ontario. He later went on to study at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he received his bachelor of arts in history and played football for the Golden Gaels.
Describing himself as driven, confident, candid and honest, Smith is truly comfortable in his own skin. Incredibly charismatic and down to earth, his friends find him charming, loveable, fun to be around, with a great sense of humour, and most of all, loyal. Years ago, Smith lost two of his closest friends within 18 months of each other, and going through the emotional turmoil has made him who he is today. From this experience, Smith has learned to always treasure those closest to him and to live each day to the fullest. In memory of his friends, he got a tattoo on his chest over his heart.
Smith has had one serious relationship in his life. He dated a woman for two-and-a-half years during university, but found that in the end, they were just not compatible as they were both looking for different things. The relationship taught him many lessons about love and helped him define what he’s looking for in a partner.
He is drawn to independent, intelligent women who are comfortable in their own skin and enjoy an active and social lifestyle. To him, the most beautiful woman is someone who can feel good wearing a ponytail, sweatpants and a sweatshirt. He says, if she can look good to him like that, she will look good to him forever.
Outside of football, Smith enjoys spending time with his friends and family, considers himself a movie buff, loves watching hockey (the Montreal Canadiens are his favourite team), and prides himself in his ability to beat anyone in a game of trivia. He is also a big fan of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette franchises.

And so begins the “Women Rip Brad”, I mean, the “Women Tell All.” First off, I’d like to say that it was great to see all the ladies again, looking great, of course. Sitting backstage watching the initial start to the women’s conversation was hilarious because I got to hear what really transpired behind the [...]
I can’t believe it’s time for hometown dates already! I know it may seem like it’s just the fifth episode – too early to meet the girls’ families – but keep in mind, I’ve spent a lot more time with them in the first month-and-a-half of shooting than you actually see in each episode. That’s [...]
I know it may have been a shock to hear that I was going from eight women to four this week, but I truly felt that if I wanted to find the right girl for me, I needed to spend more time with the women I felt a stronger connection with.
And so begins the second week of dates! What better way to start them off than with a trip to Southwestern Alberta to wrangle some cattle, right? One problem…I’ve never been on a horse, let alone corralled cattle. This minor detail is what made it easy to pick Kara for the one-on-one date. From the [...]
After the chaos of the first night, I realized this process is going to be just a tad harder then I initially thought! Having to decide who stays, and who goes at the rose ceremony is a truly unnatural feeling for me.
It’s Night One. I’m standing in the middle of the glistening driveway. Dead silence. I can hear my heart beating through my chest! Now, I’m officially nervous… To say that the introductions were some of the most nervous moments of my life would be an understatement. I was in Stage 3 of a heart attack! [...]
“Hi Brad! Yes, this is Heather calling. I’m the casting director for The Bachelor Canada!” “Haha, good one! Who is this really?” I asked. “No, really, I’m calling from The Bachelor Canada. I’d like to talk to you to see if you’re interested in possibly being Canada’s first bachelor?” As if that’s not a surreal [...]
