“Hi Brad! Yes, this is Heather calling. I’m the casting director for The Bachelor Canada!”
“Haha, good one! Who is this really?” I asked.
“No, really, I’m calling from The Bachelor Canada. I’d like to talk to you to see if you’re interested in possibly being Canada’s first bachelor?”
As if that’s not a surreal enough conversation, Heather went on to ask me a multitude of questions ranging from: “Are you ready to settle down and find love?” to the ultimate question, “boxers or briefs?”
To be honest, I never thought I would be the first Canadian bachelor. During the interview process, I had a good feeling and the casting and production team seemed to really like me, but I was afraid I was being too honest. I sat there in a chair in front of the network executives and I said, “I want to go on and find the one girl in the house that’s for me and I want to start a life with her.” I got out of the chair left the room and thought, “S***! They’re never going to pick me!”
But they did. And with one phone call I became the luckiest guy in Canada! Within days, I was swept up doing photo shoots and interviews, and being flown to Victoria, B.C. where I was told I had two days until the first cocktail party! Needless to say I didn’t sleep. I had two days of television left so I pumped out as much Adam Sandler old school classics as could!
People came in and out, cameras, lights, sound men, producers, and directors – all prepping me for what was about to happen. Everyone was so excited and so was I! At that point, I wasn’t nervous at all.
Fast forward to Night 1. I’m standing in the middle of the glistening driveway. Dead silence. I can hear my heart beating through my chest! Now, I’m officially nervous…
